Clinical information

  • A 65-year old man presented with generalized abdominal pain and diarrhea. Several large perianal skin tags were observed on physical examination, and abdominal imaging revealed irregular mural thickening of the sigmoid colon. He was treated with corticosteroids for presumed Crohn colitis, but showed no response and was referred to another institution. Colonoscopy revealed severe segmental colitis with friable ulcerated mucosa in the rectosigmoid colon and normal mucosa above 40 cm. Luminal narrowing precluded examination of the proximal colon. Biopsy samples were obtained from the sigmoid colon.
