Clinical information

  • A 51-year old woman with a history of ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis developed acute right lower quadrant pain. She underwent abdominal imaging and was found to have a thickened appendiceal wall and peri-appendiceal fluid consistent with acute appendicitis. Antibiotic therapy was initiated and her symptoms resolved completely over the following few days. One year later, she was found to have a 1 cm appendiceal cyst during abdominal imaging performed for other reasons. She underwent appendectomy at the same time she had a liver biopsy to assess for progression of primary sclerosing cholangitis. Sections of the appendix are provided.
